Aurukun State School, established in 1974, holds a significant role as the sole educational institution in Aurukun, Queensland, catering to nearly 200 students ranging from Kindergarten through to secondary education. Locally recognised as Koolkan Aurukun Community School, the institution places a strong emphasis on acknowledging and respecting the traditional owners of the land, the Wik and Kugu People. This acknowledgment extends to honoring the Elders—past, present, and emerging—who have played a crucial role in maintaining and caring for their Country.

The school's mission is deeply rooted in the recognition that education has been integral to the land for tens of thousands of years, reflecting a rich history and cultural heritage. By embracing this heritage, Aurukun State School aims to foster a learning environment that not only educates but also respects and preserves the cultural identity and wisdom of its students and the community at large.

Aurukun State School is committed to providing a comprehensive educational experience that meets the diverse needs of its students, preparing them for future challenges while maintaining a strong connection to their cultural roots. The school's dedication to honoring Indigenous knowledge and traditions underscores its role not just as an educational institution but as a custodian of cultural continuity and community resilience.
