Welcome to the Koolkan Aurukun State School website. We hope that you find the information and elements of our school here on our website, simply a start on your journey to within, and through our school.
We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the Wik, Wik Waya and Kugu People. We pay our respects to Elders past and present. We recognise their connection to country and their role in caring for and maintaining country. We acknowledge that the education of children has occurred on this land for tens of thousands of years. May their continuing strength and wisdom be with us all.
Aurukun State School opened in 1974 and is the hub of community as well as grown to reflect the Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary phases of schooling. We cater for approximately 200 Kindergarten to Secondary students.
Wik Mungkan is spoken and taught here in Aurukun, and at Koolkan Aurukun State School.
The language of instruction is through Standard Australian English from Kindy to Year 6, to ensure preparation of our students to transition to boarding schools from Year 7. Those students staying here in community are catered for, through engagement with flexible personalised secondary curriculum programs and offerings. Entrepreneurial pursuits are encourgaed and the real world practicality of training and employment as our current priority work, in terms of connecting schooling for secondary students to opportunities through design, consulation and reflection on Alternative Learning Programs, parthways and future options.
We have a Local Community Education Body known as 'Paamp' who provide the Principal, teachers, school staff with an overlay of cultural imformation, contextual guidance, historical knowledge and communication in all directions to ensure a united approach to Koolkan Aurukun SS, and our motto 'Our Children Come First'.
